CC [4] revises [3]. pT181 occurs naturally in Staphylococcus aureus
CC and encodes inducible resistance to tetracycline. It contains four
CC open reading frames encoding four putative polypeptides A, 37.5
CC kDa; B, 35 kDa; C, 23 kDa, and D, 18 kDa [3]. Polypeptide A is the
CC repC protein [2] (bases 4289-794). Polypeptides B and D (bases
CC 956-1843 and 1800-2258, respectively) are involved in tetracycline
CC resistance [3]. There is no known function for polypeptide C and
CC deletion of a large portion of it causes no noticeable changes [3].
CC The recombination site RS-A consists of 24 bp of identity (the
CC core, positions 2448-2472) flanked by some 50 base pairs of
CC decreasing homology with other small Staphylococcal plasmids [4].
CC The recombination at RS-A is recA-independent and is mediated by a
CC plasmid-encoded, transacting protein, Pre (plasmid recombination)
CC [4]. Pre-mediated recombination is site specific in that it occurs
CC within the core sequence of RS-A in a recA host [4]. Recombination
CC also occurs between two intramolecular RS-A sites [4]. Pre-RS-A is
CC not involved in plasmid maintenance [4]. Replication, originating
CC in a 168 bp span, proceeds unidirectionally and clockwise
CC (anticlockwise as the map is conventionally drawn) [2]. Polypeptide
CC C has been changed to the longer Pre protein by revisions given in
